In authentic
longbow circles one frequently hears mention of the charismatic and highly
talented
Dick Galloway. Galloway
was the prime mover in establishing the Borders as the home of the first
class bowyers
Sadly Dick Died, an old gentleman “ full of years” as the saying goes,
and I found it a privilege to know him.

We have a range of old bows from around the world These are display
for your interest within the museum
These are display boards we used to take to shows
and country fairs.

Steel Bows
The two bows on show where made by Accles & Pollock
the models were Falcon, Kestrel and Merlin.
Steel bows were first mentioned in the bible II Samuel xxii 35
He teacheth my hand to war; so that a bow of steel
is broken by mine arms.
Also in Job,ch.xx v.24
The bow of steel shall strike him through.
A company called Seefab in Sweden were manufacturing steel
bows about 1930 they also had steel strings made from very fine piano
wire approx. 9 strands with leather at either end

Replica Longbow from the “Mary Rose,”
1545
A replica longbow from Henry V111`s ship the Mary Rose
sunk,
going into battle with the invading French fleet in the year 1545.

The materials used in manufacturing the bows of the period are itemised
in the Ugarit texts:
“Let me vow birch tree from Lebanon,
Let me vow tendons from wild bulls
Let me vow horns from wild goats
Sinews from the hocks of bulls”
